Juice Journey: Day one, Morning one

Sandrine and I decided to take the Joe Cross (from the "Fat, Sick & And Nearly Dead" documentary) 10-day challenge of drinking nothing but veggie and fruit juices.  Find out how it goes as we take you through the journey.

This was quite possibly the most disgusting thing I have ever drank.  Please, whatever you do, don't sign me up for Fear Factor.

Don't forget to get in on the $25 dollar water bottle givewaway.  Just make a comment on any type of funny exercise folly you have made.  It is very broad so we will accept just about anything.

Beer Me

I am sure we have all subconsciously thought about the amount of calories in the beer a drink; consequently, marketers for brewing companies (e.g. Budweiser, Miller Genuine Draft) tailor their marketing campaign to make sure we drink a “refreshing” beer that is light in calories and great on “taste.”   Their commercials are funny, their promotions – awesome.  But is it really worth sacrificing taste for quantity?  The question lies in your purpose.

My rule of thumb:  drink light beer to save on calories if you are planning on drinking a lot; drink a premium beer to enjoy a nice, leisurely day.

POLL:

Out of these types of beer, which one would you most likely drink?

Bud Light:       16%      110 calories
Sam Adams:    20%     160 calories
Beck's:            12%      143 calories
Corona:           16%      148 calories
Guinness:          8%     126 calories
Don't Drink:    28%          0 calories

Hit the read more button below to find out how beer can be HEALTHY, check out a list of 55 beers and their calories per 12 oz., and see what is on the agenda for the next week or two!

"Don't Be So Nosy"

A dear friend of mine ask me to blog about this because it is an area of concern for that person.  The question posed was, "If someone [just recently] fractured their nose, could they run in a half-marathon?"  I don't think many of us are concerned with this because most people haven't been afflicted with this problem; however, this is important information for the "just in case" in life.

According to Milo Dakota, whose work encompasses articles in the "Journal of the American Medical Society" and has won several accolades with The New York Times," it is critical to avoid exercise for six weeks after receiving treatment for a broken nose -- this includes rhinoplasty surgery.  If you have fractured your nose but it is not serious enough to require surgery, she suggests to seek advice from your doctor before starting to go back to your exercise regime.

Now if you are me -- bullheaded and stubborn -- I would suggest giving your nose a test run before trying to accomplish such a daunting feat.  See what your nose feels like with heaving breathing; check for any unwanted mucous drainage.  Start with a one-mile run, then jump to a three.  If all is well, you should be good for a half.

I have checked some running forums to see what other people have experienced and the consensus seems to be that whether you broke or fractured your nose, you may experience a difference in your breathing.  None of the posters really elaborated on that so I can't give much more info.

For all the followers, I will check up with the person that asked me the question and find out what type of sensations -- if any -- he or she experiences during the run and I will post them in the comment section.

So to all you runners:  be careful!  :-)

Side Notes

I want to first off thank everyone that is part of R4P and the community -- you guys are awesome!  I have been extremely busy the past couple days (staff meetings, the whole Obama debacle at work, open house, and oh ya, the best part -- the jerk who ran into me on 670 west that doesn't have insurance) so my interaction and posts are becoming slightly staggered, but hopefully that will change soon.

Some things I want to point out:

1.  If you haven't voted on the "beer" poll yet, make sure to go ahead and do so.  Yes, there is a method to my madness.  It's on the right side of the page.

2.  The winners of the Shoe Bags:  I will be mailing those shortly.  I honestly have not had time yet to mail them, but I promise they will be sent by this weekend (hopefully).

3.  Something I would like to start would be a Saturday morning R4P run club for any and everyone.  The main goal of R4P is to help influence friends, family, & strangers to start living healthy.  With everyone's help, whether local or across the oceans, we can start to affect the lives of people in a positive and healthy way.

4.  On a personal note, if anyone has a car for sell that would really like to help me out, it would lift a great burden off my shoulders.  I am not going to get much out of my (stupid people w/o insurance--ugh) insurance company for the '98 Jetta that I own.  I'm looking for something moderately used that can last me a while.

Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead -- An “Oozing” Review

Coming from “down under,” Joe Cross and his 310-pound spare tire he lugs around, crosses the Pacific Ocean and a hemisphere from Australia to set out on a 60 day road trip through the land of the free – and the land of fatty food – all the while drinking a green mysterious substance that makes my nostalgic brain fibers go back to the movie:  The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2:  secret of the ooze.  Joe drinks 1,500 calories of fresh “veggies, greens and fruits” – or how I call it:  “ooze” – a day with a goal of reducing his 53-inch girth significantly and, most importantly, in hopes of curing his chronic auto-immune disorder.

Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead feels like an incantation of a Morgan Spurlock production (Super Size Me, 30 days) in where he takes on a health challenge, documents it, and adds witty entertainment to keep your attention.  Mr. Cross uses all his will power to not falter on the 60 day fast while being surround by delicious fried, fatty food we are all accustomed to in America while sharing his passion by talking to strangers about his diet and letting them have a taste of it in hopes of influencing them to take a health challenge, as what Joe says, to “Reboot” your body.

NRR: The Life of a Fantasy Football Manager -- Draft Day

Thank you to all that participated in the iPod article.  If you want to view the final playlist, go to the "Runner's
Corner" tab right below the banner.  I have created links to youtube in case you want to check a song out.

If you would like to be a part of R4P and submit an article concerning anything health or running related, or
even NRR, email me at jlusch21@gmail.com

This post is from my friend Matt Young. He gives an inside look into what
fantasy football is, the environment of a “live draft” and the anxiety of the
draft process itself.  Here’s to a new football season!

Leaving work later than usual I am excited for my first live fantasy football draft of the year – and also slightly annoyed that my girlfriend, who appears oblivious to the significance of the day, decides to stop for dinner on our way home.  Only a minor set back though, and I arrive at the Tilted Kilt, a bar rich with beer and girls in mini-skirts, right on time and quickly find our table and order a beer.  I anxiously glance over my cheatsheet once again hoping to uncover something I may have missed over the last couple weeks of preparation. For example, last year it took almost a full hour after the scheduled time to start, so I would occupy my time catching up with friends, eating and drinking and of course watching the latest NFL news while keeping my eye on the Indians’ game.

To iPod, or not to iPod: that is the question.

Kinks worked out -- let's hear what song you recommend!

I have had a lot of people answer the poll on the right side whether you listen to an iPod while you exercise (if you haven't answered it yet -- what are you waiting for!?).  It looks like the majority of you either listen to an iPod regularly or part of the time.

Now that we know that iPods are mostly part of our every day exercise routine, and assuming you listen to music on the iPod while you work out, we are going to build our very own Run4Purpose playlist compiled entirely by you!

What you are to do is to give one song (only one) that you want to contribute to the playlist.  You add it by commenting below in the "comments" section.  You can even give a rationale why you chose the song too, but remember, you can only choose one, so choose wisely.

There are also several people that have won the shoe bags but haven't claimed their prize yet.  Shame shame.  You have until this coming Sunday to do so or else they will be going in another drawing.
